Coming to America

In the early 1600's several countries started getting the idea that instead of searching for gold they could just sell slaves to Americans. The countries thought that they would get a better outcome if they sold slaves instead of taking a chance to search for gold. They thought that it would not cost too much money to transport the slaves to America to sell them. Europeans began to make voyages to Africa to get slaves. When they reached Africa they ran the Africans out of their villages. They loaded the slaves onto their ship. The part of the voyage that the slaves had to ride on was called the Middle Passage. The ships were packed as full as they could get. The living conditions on the ship were terrible. The slaves were packed anywhere that there was room. They did not have the space that they needed. The slaves did not recieve enough food or water to survive and the food and water that they did get had bacteria in it. Most of the slaves died because of diseases. Only 2 out of 10 slaves survived the journey to America. The slaves that did survive were given extra food right before they came to America so they would look better. The Europeans wanted to make the most money at the slave auction. While one slave ship was going to America another ship saw it and got close enough to get on the slave ship. They were very shocked because they did not think that many people could fit on one ship. It took the slaves between 40 and 150 days to get to America once they left Africa. When the slave ship came to America the Europeans had a slave auction to get the most money out of the slaves. A total of 10 million slaves were transported to America during this time. slave_trade_map.jpgSlave_Ship.jpg http://www.hullcc.gov.uk/portal/page_pageid=221,494859&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTALhttp://web.rollins.edu/~jsiry/JamaicaKincaid.html
